Blog Tour: The Sorceress and the Squid by Emily Mundell! || Spotlight

Hey y’all! I’m back today with…yet another blog tour*! Today, I’m featuring The Sorceress and the Squid by Emily Mundell! I’m going to be spotlighting her book, which includes what her book’s about and a little bit about the authoress herself!

*because y’all obviously don’t read the title of what I post -_-

About the Book:Cover.jpg

In the magical land of Perth, divisions between the Old Kingdom and the New have waged for centuries. The humans have long harbored a mistrust of the spell-casting Fae and vice versa. In the midst of this conflict, Estrella the Sorceress lays waste to the Training Academy for Human Warriors, making an enemy in the soldier, Jalen. During their standoff, Jalen is turned into a squid and Estrella, unable to restore him to his original form, takes pity on him and travels west across the Sea to bring him to the Wizard in hope he can be saved. But is there more to the unrest in Perth than meets the eye?

About the Author:

Emily Mundell is a 19 year old author, artist, horsewoman and lover of the wonders of the wide world. She hails from the Great White North of Canada and has spent her life growing up in the heart of rural Alberta in a close-knit farming community – though she has often entertained fantasies of inhabiting the Shire.

Writing is her true passion – though horses and art take a close second. With fantasy as her primary genre, Emily has been writing stories since the tender age of eight when she finished her first “book.” She is currently working to complete her Creative Writing Certificate through the University of Calgary. An avid bookworm, true country-mouse, and unconventional tree-climber, Emily can usually be found on a horse, working on one of her half-dozen projects, chasing a loose cow, or being swept off her feet by the man she calls her own personal “hobbit.”

Book Spotlight:

About the Book-

Being a cripple is only the beginning of Lia’s troubles. It seems as if Bioti’s goal in life is to make Lia as miserable as possible. If Lia’s purpose is to be a slave, then why did God make her a cripple? How can He make something beautiful out of her deformity?

Raoul never questioned the death of his daughter until someone reports her whereabouts. If Ellia is still alive, how has she survived these ten years with her deformity? When Raoul doesn’t know who to trust, can he trust God to keep Ellia safe when evidence reveals Bioti’s dangerous character?

As time brings more hindrances, will Raoul find Ellia, or will she forever be lost to the father she doesn’t even know is searching for her?

About the Author-

AuthorAmanda Tero is a homeschool graduate who desires to provide God-honoring, family-friendly reading material. She has enjoyed writing since before ten years old, but it has only been since 2013 that she began seriously pursuing writing again – starting with some short stories that she wrote for her sisters as a gift. Her mom encouraged her to try selling the stories she published, and since then, she has begun actively writing short stories, novellas, and novels. If something she has written draws an individual into a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ, it is worth it!

“Trust in the Lord with all thine heart, and lean not unto thine own understanding.” (Proverbs 3:5)

My Review:

I don’t really consider myself a fantasy lover. As in, if having to choose between fantasy and historical, I’d pick historical, nearly every time. However, I was excited to read Amanda’s The Secret Slipper because they’re fairytale retellings that don’t seem like retellings.

The Secret Slipper IS a Cinderella retelling, but it’s not one of those where, halfway through the first page, you go “oh…not this again.” Instead, it’s one of those where, two chapters from the end, you suddenly go, “Oh! This is a Cinderella-based story!” So for that, I was grateful, because fairy tale retellings often become very similar.

I also really liked how, while the Cinderella theme was woven throughout the story, not many of the actual Cinderella story aspects are woven in. For instance, there is no prince, no ball, no glass slipper, no evil stepmother, and the list goes on.

The Gospel was also clearly presented, both straightforwardly and allegorically. I also really liked that, because SO MUCH Christian fiction has about two mentions of God in all of 300 pages, and don’t live up to the “Christian fiction” name.

As for the story itself, I would have liked a bit more development of the characters throughout the novella. I understand that it was a novella, so I’m cutting it a bit of slack here, but there were SO MANY good characters in the story, and I would have LOVED some more character development.

Aside from that, the story was so beautifully clean. There was no romance, much less anything other than that. And that was just SO refreshing.

My Rating-

Blog Tour: The Princess and I by Rebekah Eddy!! || RELEASE DAY *insert more exclamation marks*

Hey guys! Remember a couple weeks ago, when I posted Cover Reveal: The Princess and I!!?

Well, today is RELEASE DAY!!

To celebrate, here is a general overview of the book, as well as an author interview! (A book review is coming out soon as well!!

So….let’s start off with the beautiful cover, in case you forgot.

Megan is content with her life, despite her parents’ death and her brother Malcolm’s job that keeps him busy at the King’s castle. But when she is offered the position as Princess Christine’s lady-in-waiting, Megan is glad of the change in scenery and accepts it with the hope that she can spend more time with her brother. The promise from Malcolm of lessons in swordsmanship only adds to her enthusiasm.
However, helping keep an eye on the emotional and excitable young lady proves to be much harder than becoming her friend. As rumors of war circulate the castle, Megan strives to encourage her new friend even as she tries to settle the doubts and fears in her own heart when her responsibility in protecting the Princess is put to the test. Follow the unwanted adventure which serves to teach her that loyal friendship, true love, and God’s amazing grace will always triumph over revenge, greed, and hate.

(so um…I was only allowed 5 questions? So like, y’all have to check out the other interviews to find out other things? Like Rebekah didn’t make stalking The Princess and I easy? Like what is this world?)

Me: What inspired you to write The Princess and I? Did you have any particular stories that you pulled from?
Rebekah: My love of all things Medieval. I’ve always loved the old fairy tales with princes and princesses, kings and queens, and knights and ladies. There wasn’t any story in particular that I pulled from, but I did draw a lot from the old stories in general as well as Medieval history. 🙂

Me: What were some of the challenges you faced while writing? What got you through them?
Rebekah: I see what you’re doing…you’re sneaking extra questions in, aren’t you? 😛 Well, I’ll let it go THIS time.
Some of the challenges I faced while writing included technical issues, writer’s block, procrastination (hey, it happens to the best of us ;), and lack of inspiration. What got me through them? Well, having a dad that computers love helped for the technical stuff. For the writer’s block I worked on another story briefly and talked to myself in the shower until I came up with a new scene. ;P When I procrastinated, well, that was my own fault and I just had to make myself sit down behind my computer and WRITE. The lack of inspiration caused me to take a step back and take a break for a couple days while I listened to music, scrolled through Pinterest, and read some books. And BOOM I was inspired again. 😉

Me: Is there a section that you’re particularly fond of? Can you share? 🙂
Rebekah: Well, so the scene that’s my FAVORITE contains the biggest plot spoiler in the entire book. So, no, I can’t share that one with you. 😉 I really loved the whole ending of my book too…but again, spoilers. Guess you’ll just have to buy my book. 😛

Me: What’s your favorite/ideal writing setting? Any drinks/food/people/music that you need?
Rebekah: A quiet, sunlit room, sitting in the corner of our couch, on my bed, or at my desk. A mug of something hot nearby, and maybe some fruit or crackers on a plate. Preferably no people (I’m very social, so having people nearby would seriously distract me) and no internet access (because…procrastination. ‘Nough said.) I’d definitely have music going as long as it doesn’t have and singing in it. Preferably movie soundtrack.

About the Authorauthor-rebekah-eddy

Rebekah grew up surrounded by family members who appreciated and read good literature. First, she fell in love with the stories her parents read aloud to her from the Bible and books like The Chronicles of Narnia, Great Expectations, The Hobbit, and Anne of Green Gables. After learning to read on her own, she discovered other fantastic books which helped to build her ever growing imagination.
She completed her first written work at the tender age of eight and now uses it to humble herself whenever the need arises. The story did serve to show her that God had given her a desire to write, however, and from that moment on Rebekah has never looked back or regretted picking up her pencil and becoming an author.
This eighteen-year-old homeschool graduate lives in rainy Western Washington and is currently working on receiving her BA in English in order to further her passion for creating worlds on paper.
